Background: Glucocorticoids play a key role in determining body fat distribution. Excess circulating glucocorticoids lead to intrahepatic fat accumulation. Obesity is associated with enhanced glucocorticoid production but this is offset by enhanced degradation such that circulating steroid concentrations are normal.
